Flutterwave Boosts Zambia’s Digital Economy with New Payment Licence

Africa’s leading payments technology company, Flutterwave, has taken a significant step in its Pan-African expansion by securing a Payment System Licence from the Bank of Zambia. Announced in early March 2025, this milestone enables Flutterwave to roll out its innovative payment solutions in Zambia, empowering local businesses to streamline transactions and tap into local and global markets.

With this licence, Zambian enterprises can now accept payments from customers worldwide using various methods, including cards and mobile money, while also facilitating seamless payouts in Zambian Kwacha to employees, suppliers, and partners.

According to recent reports, Flutterwave’s entry into Zambia comes at a pivotal time as the country’s digital economy continues to grow, driven by increasing internet penetration and a mobile money adoption rate that accounts for nearly 70% of its financial inclusion.

The company’s robust payment infrastructure, which supports over 30 currencies and processes millions of transactions daily, is set to enhance financial inclusion and economic growth in the region. “Our goal is to provide businesses across Africa with the tools they need to compete globally,” said Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, Flutterwave’s Founder and CEO, in a statement echoing sentiments from Techpoint Africa’s coverage of the launch.

This move builds on Flutterwave’s recent expansions, including its acquisition of a Payment Service Provider licence in Ghana in August 2024 and a Payment Systems Operator licence in Uganda, as noted by Electronic Payments International.

For Zambia, Flutterwave offers a gateway for international companies eyeing the market, while local businesses gain access to cross-border payment solutions to reach customers abroad. The company’s commitment to regulatory compliance was emphasized by Chief Regulatory Officer Oluwabankole Falade, who expressed gratitude to the Bank of Zambia for its trust and collaboration, a sentiment also highlighted by The Fintech Times.

As Flutterwave continues to bridge financial gaps across Africa, its Zambian operations are poised to accelerate digital transactions, reduce reliance on cash, and foster a more connected economy. With a track record of empowering over 1.5 million businesses continent-wide, this latest development reinforces Flutterwave’s role as a key player in Africa’s fintech revolution.
